Early morning departure from hotel to one of Tarapoto’s most popular tourist destinations: La Laguna de Sauce, or Laguna Azul (The Sauce Lagoon). The ascent towards the lagoon boasts gorgeous river views, particularly at Punta del Gallinazo – or Vulture Point. Meanwhile, the arrival to the lagoon is particularly visually stunning! Then, settle in to your surroundings and enjoy a relaxing tour through the Lagoon, stopping at the best swimming beaches along the way. The Laguna Azul is a beautiful, clear pool of water surrounded by vast green hills. The shores of the lagoon bring together local community members who dedicate their days to fishing in the fresh waters. These artisanally caught, local fish are the very same ones that star in many of the area’s delicious dishes. Return to Tarapoto.

Today you will have the chance to revel in the beauty of one of the Amazon’s most spectacular waterfalls, located just 20 minutes from the city. As you make your way, however, stop to delight in the views from the naturally formed hillside lookout point, and take some time to snap memorable photographs of the stunning surrounding natural scenery. Upon arriving at the waterfall site, take a 15-minute hike through the lush Natural Reserve, until arriving at the famed Ahuashiyacu Waterfall. Here, you will have the chance to enjoy a refreshing dip in the clean, crystalline waters and explore the surrounding forest. Transfer and overnight at the Pumarinri.

To access the Pucayaquillo Waterfalls one must make their way down a jungle trail (1.8km) covered in thick, green foliage. This small trek gives visitors the chance to engage with and learn about Tarapoto’s incredible variety of plants and trees – from the pioneer plants and palms, to the hard-wood foresting species. There are epiphytes – like lilies, vines, and climbers, as well as an impressive assortment of medicinal plants, and resins used to glaze native ceramics. As you wander, you are sure to encounter colorful dart frogs, lines of leafcutter ants carrying their green treasures, and – of course – the very “respected” bullet ants. After the fascinating hike, reward yourself with a regenerating swim in the waterfall’s crystal-blue waters, and take some time to contemplate the dance of the elegant, electric blue morpho butterfly. After lunch, you will have some time to rest before being invited to embark on an exploration walk through the surrounding forest. Make your way to the Yuracyaquillo Ravine, home to many dart frogs, morpho butterflies, and bright heliconias. You will also have the chance to tour the local fish farms, the gardens, and the cacao plantation. Overnight at Pumarinri.

The two main rivers of the San Martin region are the Huallaga, and the Mayo, one of its effluents. These two come together close to the Pumarinri. On this tour, you are invited to explore these powerful water sources, as you depart from the Huallaga Canyons and cross the Estero rapids, making your way to the placid and serpentine Mayo River. As you navigate the jungle waters, look around and take in the lush green surrounding mountains, notice the small riverbank communities along the way – like the Shapaja, as well as the many Indian zebu cow farms. While rainy season offers more powerful and full rivers, the summer months gives visitors the chance to enjoy riverbanks and beaches, and the abundant fishing opportunities. No matter the time, however, there are always a wide variety of birds in the area. As you explore, search the skies and trees and hone your bird watching skills as you look out for herons, toucans, the colorful hoatzin, and the infallible common kingfisher – among many other native birds. Lunch and transfer to airport.
