VIPAC Adventures offers this well-known route that goes from the coast to the Peruvian high tropical forest. We will mainly travel by the Fernando Belaunde Terry highway and some nearby roads. There will be 8D/7N, between 0 to 2400 masl. This route allows you to birding in the northern part of the western side of the Andes, the northern zone of the dry forests of the Maranon, the eastern side of the Andes and the Peruvian high forest.

Day 1: Lima | Inc: - 

International Arrival in Lima, for Start the birding adventure. In Lima we will have an informative talk about the details of the route we will follow. We will spend the night in Lima. The next day, we will fly to Chiclayo for start birding adventure, in 13D/12N of intense birding. Overnight in Lima.

Day 2: Lima / Chiclayo/ Salas | Inc: B/L/D

Pomac Historic Sanctuary Forest and Puerto Eten. Directly from the airport, we move to the Pomac Historic Sanctuary Forest (75 masl). This is worldwide known town, perfectly combines birdwatching in an environment surrounded by archaeological remains of the Sican culture. In this place we will look for Short-tailed Woodstar, Amazilia Hummingbird, Oasis Hummingbird, Peruvian Sheartail, Necklaced Spinetail (maculata), Scarlet-backed Woodpecker, Collared Antshrike, Coastal Miner, Grey-and-White Tyrannulet, Tumbes Tyrant, Baird's Flycatcher, Rufous Flycatcher, Peruvian Plantcutter, Superciliated Wren, Tumbes Swallow, White-tailed Jay, Cinereous Finch, Sulphur-throated Finch, and White-edged Oriole, among others. In the afternoon we will go to Puerto Eten (0 masl) looking for the Peruvian Tern, Peruvian Booby, Peruvian Pelican, Peruvian Thick-knee, and some species of migratory birds. Before nightfall, we will go to Salas, where we will spend the night. (Los Faiques Ecolodge).

Day 3: Salas| Inc: B/L/D

Quebrada Frijolillo and Ñaupe Hill. We will dedicate a great part of this day to birding in Quebrada Frijolillo (350 masl). We will walk through a stony path with a mild slope for more than more than 1.5 km looking for the White-winged Guan, Pale-browed Tinamou, Ecuadorian Trogon, Ecuadorian Piculet, Henna-hooded Foliage-gleaner, Tumbes Hummingbird, Tumbes Sparrow, Plumbeous-backed Thrush, White-headed Brush-Finch, Gray-breasted Flycatcher, Sooty-crowned Flycatcher, Pacific Elaenia, Gray-and-gold Warbler, White-headed Brush-Finch, Black-capped Sparrow, and many other awesome birds. To conclude the day we will visit the Ñaupe Hill (320 masl) Pacific Parrotlet, Peruvian Plantcutter, Tumbes Sparrow, Baird's Flycatcher, Elegant Crescentchest, Tumbesian Tyrannulet, and other amazing species. We will return to Salas to spend the night (Los Faiques Ecolodge). Here, taking advantage of the night, we will look for Scrub Nightjar, Lesser Nighthawk and Peruvian Pygmy-Owl, among others species.

Day 4: Salas / Jaén | Inc: B/L/D

Limón de Porculla and Huancabamba River. Very early we will leave from Salas to the village of Limón de Porculla (1750 masl). From there, we will take a deviation from the main road to arrive at the place of Birding, where there are easy trails to walk. In these trails we will be looking for the Gray-Chinned Hermit (porcullae), Line-cheeked Spinetail, Rufous-necked Foliage-gleaner, Chapman's Antshrike, Piura Chat-Tyrant, Grey-browed Brush-finch, Bay-crowned Brush-finch, White-winged Brush-finch, Black-cowled Saltator, and Three-banded Warble, among others. Following our route, we will pass through the Abra de Porculla (2137 masl), with many rice fields beside us in the Huancabamba river Valley. There we will have good chances to watch waterfowl from the road until we reach Jaen City, where we will spend the night (Urqu Hotel). Among the probable species that we will observe we have Spotted Rail, Paint-billed crake, Gray-breasted Crake.


Day 5: Jaén / Achamaqui | Inc: B/L/D

Forests of Yanahuanca and Utcubamba River. Early morning, we will go to the Yanahuanca Forest (810 masl), where we will look for endemic bird species of the Marañon valley dry forest. The principal targets are: Northern Slaty-Antshrike (leucogaster), Little Inca Finch, Marañon Spinetail, Marañon Crecentchest, Red-crested Finch (fargoi), Spot-throated Hummingbird, Necklaced Spinetail (chinchipensis), Marañon Thrush, Black-capped Sparrow (nigriceps), Collared Antshrike (shumbae), Peruvian Pigeon, Ecuadorian Ground-dove, Sooty-crowned Flycatcher, Speckle-breasted Wren (sclateri), Buff-bellied Tanager, among others. Continuing with the tour we will pass through the rice fields in the Utcubamba valley where we can observe waterfowl from the road, and where there are good chances to observe Spotted Rail, Paint-billed crake, Gray-breasted Crake, Black-capped Donacobius, and many others amazing species. Afterwards, we will get into the narrowest part of the Utcubamba river canyon, where we will have chances to watch: Fasciated Tiger-Heron, Torrent Duck, Mitred Parakeet, Spot-throated Hummingbird, Marañon Thrush, Marañon Crescentchest, Peruvian Pigeon, and many other interesting species. We will conclude the day at Hacienda Achamaqui (1690 masl), here we will spend the night. A nocturnal birdwatching session will take place (Owling), the targets are: Buff-fronted Owl (harrisii) and Koepcke's Screech-Owl.

Day 6: Achamaqui / Huembo/ Abra Patricia | Inc: B/L/D

Achamaqui, Utucamba River and Reserva Huembo. Early morning, we will leave Casa Hacienda Achamaqui to continue along the Utcubamba river valley until we reach the Huembo Reserve (2070 masl), in this place, there have been implemented fountains for hummingbirds and feeders for tanagers. The main targets here are the Marvelous Spatuletail, Greenfronted Lancebill, Amethyst-throated Sunangel, Long-tailed Sylph, Greenish Puffleg, Emerald-bellied Puffleg, Booted Racket-tail, Little Woodstar, Violetfronted Brilliant, Speckle-chested Piculet and many other awesome birds. The trails are nice and easy to walk. At the end of the day, we will reach the Abra Patricia (2300 masl) where we will be looking for nocturnal birds (owling) like Stygian Owl, Long-whiskered Owlet, Cinnamon Screech-Owl. Overnight in Fundo Alto Nieva.

Day 7: Abra Patricia | Inc: B/L/D

Abra Patricia. During this day we will cover the different trails that we will find in the upper part of Abra Patricia, these trails are well designed and are easy to follow. The targets here are: Spot-winged Parrotlet, Pale-billed Antpitta, Rusty-tinged Antpitta, Chestnut Antpitta, Ochre-fronted Antpitta, Largefooted Tapaculo, Spotted Barbtail, Johnson's Tody-Flycatcher, Unstreaked Tit-Tyrant , Peruvian Tyrannulet , Rufous-Vented Tapaculo, Inca Flycatcher, Ornate Flycatcher, Masked Fruiteater, Yellow-scarfed Tanager, Ornate Flycatcher, Red-ruffed Fruitcrow, Swallow-tailed Nightjar, Black-Faced Tanager, Green-and-black Fruiteater, Uniform Antshrike,. These are just an example of the biodiverse avifauna that we will find there. In the afternoon we will come back to the Fundo Alto Nieva were we will have good chances to watch hummingbirds in the feeders and nearby trails. We will spend the night here and the next day we will be looking for birds through the trails system of the Abra Patricia.

Day 8: Transfer Abra Patricia-Jaén / Lima | Inc: B/L 

Early morning, we will to go back Jaén to finish the tour and you will be ready for your return to Lima and your subsequent international boarding.
