This route is thought for Birders who want to see of endemic species of the northern dry forests of Peru and enjoy a great diversity of birds. In 7D/8N of intense birding, from zero to near 3750 masl.

Day 1: Lima | Inc: - 

International Arrival in Lima, for Start the birding adventure. In Lima we will have an informative talk about the details of the route we will follow. We will spend the night in Lima. The next day, we will fly to Chiclayo for start birding adventure, in 13D/12N of intense birding. Overnight in Lima.

Day 2: Lima / Chiclayo/ Salas | Inc: B/L/D

Pomac Historic Sanctuary Forest and Puerto Eten. Directly from the airport, we move to the Pomac Historic Sanctuary Forest (75 masl). This is worldwide known town, perfectly combines birdwatching in an environment surrounded by archaeological remains of the Sican culture. In this place we will look for Short-tailed Woodstar, Amazilia Hummingbird, Oasis Hummingbird, Peruvian Sheartail, Necklaced Spinetail (maculata), Scarlet-backed Woodpecker, Collared Antshrike, Coastal Miner, Grey-and-White Tyrannulet, Tumbes Tyrant, Baird's Flycatcher, Rufous Flycatcher, Peruvian Plantcutter, Superciliated Wren, Tumbes Swallow, White-tailed Jay, Cinereous Finch, Sulphur-throated Finch, and White-edged Oriole, among others. In the afternoon we will go to Puerto Eten (0 masl) looking for the Peruvian Tern, Peruvian Booby, Peruvian Pelican, Peruvian Thick-knee, and some species of migratory birds. Before nightfall, we will go to Salas, where we will spend the night (Los Faiques Ecolodge).

Day 3: Salas| Inc: B/BL/D

Quebrada Frijolillo and Ñaupe Hill. We will dedicate a great part of this day to birding in Quebrada Frijolillo (350 masl). We will walk through a stony path with a mild slope for more than more than 1.5 km looking for the White-winged Guan, Pale-browed Tinamou, Ecuadorian Trogon, Ecuadorian Piculet, Henna-hooded Foliage-gleaner, Tumbes Hummingbird, Tumbes Sparrow, Plumbeous-backed Thrush, White-headed Brush-Finch, Gray-breasted Flycatcher, Sooty-crowned Flycatcher, Pacific Elaenia, Gray-and-gold Warbler, White-headed Brush-Finch, Black-capped Sparrow, and many other awesome birds. To conclude the day we will visit the Ñaupe Hill (320 masl) Pacific Parrotlet, Peruvian Plantcutter, Tumbes Sparrow, Baird's Flycatcher, Elegant Crescentchest, Tumbesian Tyrannulet, and other amazing species. We will return to Salas to spend the night. Here, taking advantage of the night, we will look for Scrub Nightjar, Lesser Nighthawk and Peruvian Pygmy-Owl, among others species. Overnight in Los Faiques Ecolodge.

Day 4: Salas / Cajamarca | Inc: B/BL/D

Abra Gavilán and Chonta River. Early in the morning, we will go to the Abra Gavilán (3050 masl,) to watch birds on the western slope, the targets are: Black Metaltail, Giant Hummingbird, Unicoloured Tapaculo, Black-eared Hemispingus (piurae), Peruvian Sierra-Finch, and Rufous-backed Inca-Finch, among others. After that, we will cross to the eastern side of the western Andes. In this place, there are easy to follow trails with more than 200 m. It is possible to watch birds even from the road. In the afternoon we will visit the Chonta River (2800 masl), here we will have good chances to watch Gray-bellied Comet, Striated Earthcreeper, Baron's Spinetail, Rusty-crowned Tit-spinetail and others species. Overnight in Tartar Hotel.


Day 5: Cajamarca / Leymebamba | Inc: B/BL/D  

Comullca Peak, Hacienda el Limón, Chacanto and Balsas. This day will be of intense Birding on the eastern side of the western Andes. Early morning, we will leave from Cajamarca until our first stop at the Abra Comullca (3750 masl), in this peak, our targets are: Andean Tinamou, White-tailed Shrike-Tyrant, Rufous-webbed Bush-Tyrant, Streakthroated Bush-Tyrant, Black Metaltail, Great Sapphirewing, and many other tropical birds. Then we will visit the surroundings of Hacienda Limón (2100 masl), later the birding will be between Chacanto and Balsas (1000 masl) where we will cross the Marañón River to get to sleep near Leymebamba. In this place we will look for endemic species of the Marañon Dry Forest Chestnut-backed Thornbird, Grey-winged Inca-Finch and Blacknecked Woodpecker, Buff-bridled Inca-Finch, Peruvian Pigeon, Yellow-faced Parrotlet, Tropical Gnatcatcher (maior) Spot-throated Hummingbird, Buff-bellied Tanager, Scarlet-fronted Parakeet, White-Winged Black-Tyrant, Black-crested Tit-Tyrant, and White-tailed Shrike-Tyrant, among others. In all locations there are paths with steep slopes. It is possible to see birds even from the road. Overnight in Rangra Wasi Ecolodge Leymebamba.

Day 6: Leymebamba / Achamaqui | Inc: B/BL/D

Abra Barro Negro, Cañon de Atuen and Achamaqui. From Leymebamba we will return to the Abra Barro Negro (3680 masl) to look for birds from the edge of the road in both, the pajonal and the montane forests. The targets here are: Amethyst-throated Sunangel, Rainbow Starfrontlet, Purple-throated Sunangel, Coppery Metaltail, Sapphire-vented Puffleg, Gray-breasted Mountain-Toucan, Golden-plumed Parakeet, Blackish Tapaculo, Neblina Tapaculo, Many-striped Canastero, White-chinned Thistletail, Russet-mantled Softtail, and Drab Hemispingus, among others. In the afternoon we will visit the Atuen Canyon (2500 masl). We have the option of visiting the Leymebamba Museum that houses about 200 mummies brought from the Laguna de Los Cóndores. Then the tour will continue along the Utcubamba River Valley until arriving at the Casa Hacienda Achamaqui (1690 masl) where we will watch owls and other night birds.

Day 7: Achamaqui / Huembo / Jaen | Inc: B/BL/D 

Achamaqui, Utucamba River and Reserva Huembo. Early morning, we will leave Casa Hacienda Achamaqui to continue along the Utcubamba river valley until we reach the Huembo Reserve (2070 masl), in this place, there have been implemented fountains for hummingbirds and feeders for tanagers. The main targets here are the Marvelous Spatuletail, Greenfronted Lancebill, Amethyst-throated Sunangel, Long-tailed Sylph, Greenish Puffleg, Emerald-bellied Puffleg, Booted Racket-tail, Little Woodstar, Violetfronted Brilliant, Speckle-chested Piculet and many other awesome birds. The trails are nice and easy to walk. At the end of the day, we will to go in Jaen. Overnight in Urqu Hotel.

Day 8: Jaén / Lima | Inc: B/L 

Forests of Yanahuanca and Jaen River. Very early, we will visit the Yanahuanca Forest (810 masl). There, we will find a trail with more than one kilometer that passes through diverse habitats of the Dry Forests of the Marañon, where will we look for Northern Slaty-Antshrike (leucogaster), Little Inca Finch, Marañon Spinetail, Marañon Crecentchest, Red-crested Finch (fargoi), Spot-throated Hummingbird, Necklaced Spinetail (chinchipensis), Marañon Thrush, Black-capped Sparrow (nigriceps), Collared Antshrike (shumbae), Peruvian Pigeon, Ecuadorian Ground-dove, Sooty-crowned Flycatcher, Speckle-breasted Wren (sclateri), Buff-bellied Tanager, and many other birds. Before nightfall, we will go to Jaen city, and on the way we will pass through several rice fields in the Jaen River Valley, where we will watch several species of waterfowl like: Spotted Rail, Paint-billed crake, Gray-breasted Crake, Black-capped Donacobius, and many other awesome species. In middle day we will to go Jaén airport for finish the tour and you will be ready for your return to Lima and your subsequent international boarding.
