Puno received more than 50 thousand tourists during Candelaria Festival
According to the Regional Directorate of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Direcetur), Puno received 50.000 domestic and foreign tourist arrivals during Virgin of Candelaria Feast. This forecast is based on figures from previous years, where 70% of visitors came from other parts of the country and 30% came from abroad.
It is celebrated every February and Virgin of Candelaria Feast lasts 18 days. There are religious processions, festive and cultural activities rooted in Catholic tradition and symbolic elements of the Andean worldview. Festivities start with a mass and then there is an ancestral purification ceremony. The next day, after a liturgical event, the image of Virgin of Candelaria is carried throughout the procession along with dances and traditional music. Then, festivities continue with two competitions, where 170 groups, this is 40,000 contestants around the region participate in dancing and music shows. Festivities end with a ceremony honoring the Virgin, one concert and goodbye masses.
This festival represents one of the biggest cultural events in Peru, and it is one of the most significant religious festivities in South America due to the number of symbols and artistic demonstrations from Quechua, Aymara and highland cultures.
