Due to its Aerial Accessibility, Lima is Chosen as the Location for the Copa Libertadores Final
In light of the current social-political climate in Chile, the CONMEBOL has designated Lima as the headquarters for the Final Game of the Copa Libertadores. The final game – in which the River Plate and Flamengo teams will compete – will be held at the Monumental Stadium in Ate, on Saturday the 23rd of November.
Many people were baffled by the institution’s decision to elect Lima as a host city, after the institution – presided over by Alejandro Domínguez – previously denied the city of Lima the opportunity to host the final game of the Copa Sudamericana.
When asked about these decisions, Alejandro Domínguez explained the context in which the choice to withdrawal Lima as the headquarters for the Copa Sudamericana was made. He subsequently shared that Peru has been chosen to host the 2021 FIFA U-17 World Cup.
“Many things have changed since Lima was denied the chance to host the Copa Sudamericana Final. There were events on a public level – like the changes in local government, as well as in the FPF presidency – which made it impossible for us to know with whom to work. We are aware that the FIFA has chosen Lima as the headquarters for the 2021 FIFA U-17, so the issues were clearly in response to the former lack of authority, which has now been reestablished,” stated Domínguez.
Meanwhile, Alejandro Domínguez specified some of the qualities that work to Lima’s benefit in acting as the host city for this final Copa Libertadores match. These include its aerial connectivity, easy accessibility from other major cities, and the fact that its close enough for both River Plate and Flamengo fans to travel to.
“There were many offers from countries both on and off the continent. We believe that Lima provides a good alternative for those who purchased tickets to assist the game in Santiago. It’s a middle point for both cities and it is readily accessible by air. In another circumstance, I know that Lima will present itself as a possible headquarters for any Cup, and it is an alternative that we find viable,” Domínguez concluded.
