Cusco Travel Agencies Work to Reforest the Machu Picchu Sanctuary
Travel agencies and authorities from different areas across the region of Cusco, especially the district of Machu Picchu Pueblo, are coordinating for the execution of the “One million trees for Machu Picchu” Project. The initiative consists of reforesting the historic sanctuary with the voluntary help of tourists who visit the site.
The project proposes that agencies sell tour packages with the option to voluntarily cover the cost of a tree that will subsequently be planted, with the goal of reestablishing the flora that has been systematically destroyed over the last few years due to fires within areas of the Sanctuary.
According to Silvia Uscamayta, president of the Tourism Agency Association (AATC), the establishment of the project is in the final stretch, which consists of validating the method of charging the tourists for their contribution. In addition, she added that the application will have a window of five years, in order for the initiative to be sustainable.
