Central is the sixth best restaurant in the world, and the first in South America
Central, owned by chef Virgilio Martinez, landed sixth place in the 2019 ranking of the 50 best restaurants in the world, marking its second consecutive year in the spot. Meanwhile, the restaurant holds its place as the best restaurant in Latin America.
The 18th edition of the famed gala, which brings together the worlds best chefs, was held in Asia for the first time after organizers announced that the awards would begin a tour around the world. Since its first international version, when the ceremony moved from London to New York (2016), the festivities have been held in Melbourne (2017), and in Bilbao (2018).
This year, those responsible for the famous list – which has been elaborated by the British magazine, Restaurant, since 2002 – decided to radically change the controversial rules, stating that restaurants previously ranked as best in the world would no longer have the chance to hold the number one spot again. This discarded last year’s winner, chef Massimo Bottura’s Italian Osteria Franciscana, as well as the Spanish restaurant, El Celler de Can Roca (winner of 2013 and 2015 editions) – which came in at second place in the last edition –, and New York’s Eleven Madison Park, winner of the 2017 edition, and holder of fourth place in 2018.
