Belmond launches in Peru the first luxury night train in South America
Belmond Andean Explorer has recently inaugurated the first luxury night train in all South America, which will travel across the highest roads on earth, crossing the Andes (Cusco, Puno and Arequipa.)
The journey will have many stops. In Cusco, visitors will go to the archaeological site of Raqchi, in the province of Canchis, to visit the Temple of Wiracocha. There will be one stop in Marangani, located on the border with Puno, where you can see the snow-covered mountain of Chimboya.
At night, you will rest in the city of Puno. The next day you will go on speedboats to see the Titicaca Lake, the deepest lake in the world. Then, the journey will continue towards Arequipa, where you will visit the Colca canyon.
The train has hotel like accommodations. It is 305 meters long and has 16 wagons that can host up to 48 guests on board.
The inaugural trip was on May 5th; it left in the morning from Wanchaq station to Cusco. The lowest price per person is $480.
In other news, the company announced that all the money raised in the first trip will go to UNICEF, to help children affected by El Niño in the north of the country and in Lima.
